While volunteering with a friends nonprofit was taken by the dust filled school yard, it didn’t feel inviting or pleasant to be in and was certainly was not functioning on an ecological level.

We were able to work with the local nursery and their native plant expert to source the plants, we used recycled bricks left over from our original project (to rebrick the schools walkway). My design used spirals to allow for use and creation of different microclimates within the very harsh site environment. I also wanted to provide built in seating as this was an area the moms would wait for their kids to be get out of school.

The nursery agreed to help maintain the space (for free) while the plants got established, since then I’ve been told the garden has continued to thrive and the local moms are happy to sit on the edges of the spirals in the shade not have to wait for their children in a dust pit under the only source of shade on the property.
